Miniature Dachshunds have short legs, an elongated body, long and floppy ears, and an adorably alert facial expression. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, including: red, cream, black and tan, blue, chocolate, spotted dapple (merle), and even striped brindle.
Here at TeaCups, Puppies & Boutique, we carry both the smooth and longhaired versions of the Miniature Dachshund. Miniature Dachshunds should be socialized at an early age to avoid excessive aggressiveness towards other animals. This breed requires a firm “pack leader” type of owner to avoid territorial behavioral problems. The Miniature Dachshund is also sweet, loyal, devoted to its family, and has moderate protective instincts.
It’s clever, independent, courageous, and has even been known to take on foxes and otters! Miniature Dachshunds are energetic, playful, fun, and love to chase small animals, birds and tennis balls with great determination and ferocity! They can also be mischievous and sometimes stubborn, with a tendency to try to train their owner(s). The Miniature Dachshund has several terrier-like characteristics, including an instinct to dig. The Dachshund was recognized by the AKC in 1885. These Miniature Dachshunds were bred for the purpose of hunting smaller game, such as stoat and hare. The breed’s population dwindled during WWI, but after being imported from Germany to the USA, the gene pool once again increased. Through a selective breeding process, an even smaller version of the Dachshund, known as the “Miniature Dachshund,” was developed. Dachshunds were specifically bred to hunt badgers, hence the name “Dachshund.” In German, the word “dachs” means badger, and “hund” means “dog.” The Dachshund’s short legs allowed them to get deep down into the burrows and dig with more efficiency. The Dachshund originated in Germany in the early 1600s.
